Jones suspended indefinitely, title stripped, Cormier vs. Johnson to headline UFC 187

UFC president Dana White, CEO Lorenzo Fertitta, and COO Lawrence Epstein all flew to Albuquerque on Tuesday for a meeting Tuesday afternoon with light heavyweight Jones and his legal team. This of course follows Jones' arrest for leaving an accident involving personal injuries; the felony charge has a penalty of up to three years in prison.

White told ABC affiliate KOAT Matt Howerton that he wanted to talk to Jon Jones and his attorney personally about the arrest. White reported that it was a good meeting, and said he was heading back to Vegas to decide what to do next.

"You forget that these guys are human beings, and people make mistakes," White said to Howerton, in a statement that some took to mean Jones would escape harsh sanction.

However, White appeared on FOX Sports Live and said Jones was suspended indefinitely and that his title was removed.

"Obviously, he’s very disappointed," said White. "He wanted to go down as one of the greatest ever, but it is what it is. The show must go on.”

The difficult and highly-principled decision will cost the company millions in the short term, but puts mixed martial arts on firm footing as a mainstream sport. In the meantime, prizefighter Floyd Mayweather Jr,, who is known to have committed seven cases of domestic assault, on five women, across a dozen years, and has served time for it, will be fighting Manny Pacquiao in what is being billed as the fight of the century.

Daniel Cormier and Anthony Johnson will fight for the vacant title in the new main event at UFC 187. Cormier is coming off a decision loss to the former champion at UFC 182 in January. Johnson has gone since returning to the UFC at 205, with wins over Phil Davis,  Lil Nog, and Alexander Gustafsson.

Jones made his first public statement since the incident.
